by Adam & Megan

Ideal for city breaks, luxury getaways and corporate stays alike, the four-star Andersen Hotel is a vibrant and stylish luxury boutique design hotel centrally located in the heart of the Danish capital, just a short walk from some of the best loved landmarks and attractions in the city.

Table of Contents

The hotel prides itself on being Copenhagen’s original boutique hotel and is consistently ranked amongst the best loved and top rated properties in the city. The hotel calls itself “a luxurious retreat for global cosmopolitans, right in the center of the action” and it is very hard to argue with that description.

Opened in April 2012, the family-run Andersen Hotel is part of the Absalon Hotel Group and sits on the opposite corner of the Istedgade (the main street in the hip and trendy Vesterbro district) to its larger sister hotel, Absalon Hotel, which was founded back in 1938 by current General Manager Karen Nedergaard’s grandmother, Erna Andersen, after whom the Andersen Hotel is named.

May 2015 saw ‘a completely new’ Absalon Hotel reopen to the public following a total renovation of the property and all 161 rooms and suites, and four years later (in February 2019) the family completely renovated the Andersen Hotel, with all 69 rooms and suites, the Lobby Lounge and breakfast area getting redecorated in the bold, vibrant colours, styles and textiles that have become something of a signature of the hotel.

Each of the 69 rooms and suites are individually decorated with textiles, wallpapers, cushions, and curtains from the award-winning English Designers Guild, known for its use of striking colours, exclusive wallpapers and bold design choices.

For their stay, guests are able to customise their choice of vibe, style and room type to ensure the perfect room type for them. Room types include: Cool, Brilliant, Wonderful, Mega Wonderful, and Amazing Junior Suite, and increase based on room space and amenities included. After selecting the room type you can then select your preferred style: Princess, Mermaid, or Emperor. Each has a distinct colour scheme and feel.

PRINCESS: A stunning combination of vibrant purple and striking Magenta provides an elegant, yet warm atmosphere

MERMAID: Complementary shades of vivid turquoise and lime reflect the soothing elements of water

EMPEROR: Calming blue and vibrant magenta add a touch of almost regal luxury

For our visit we stayed in a Mega Wonderful Room (pictured, above) decorated in the bold ‘Princess’ style, with a striking magenta-wallpapered feature-wall behind the bed, lavish velvet blackout curtains and blinds, and a stylish contemporary sofa bed standing out against the muted bedding, walls, monochrome artwork and room features.

The room was bright, warm and spacious, with a good-sized and very comfortable double bed, two bathrooms (shower only, though some rooms do include bathtubs), a relaxing sofa area and a view of the hotel’s inner courtyard. Everything in the room reflects the modern, boutique vibe of the hotel and the urban Vesterbro district in which it is located, and it all feels very slick, stylish and welcoming.

Amenities in the room included: a large flat-screen TV, a safe/safety box, Nespresso coffee machine, fridge/cooling cabinet, slippers and robes, hairdryer, iron, trouser press and plenty of plug sockets/charging points. The hotel also offers free high-speed wi-fi throughout. All 69 rooms and suites are air-conditioned too.

Bathrooms all have stylish Philippe Starck fittings and, what’s more, all toiletries and grooming products included in the room are exclusively Molton Brown for that added hint of luxury!

The Andersen Hotel does not have a restaurant area and does not offer lunch or dinner options in-house, however it does offer a brilliant buffet-style organic breakfast, mostly continental, available in its special breakfast area, adjoining the main lobby on the ground floor.

Again the breakfast area is nicely decorated in the familiar tones of forest green and warm berry and feels very inviting and fun.

The breakfast mainly consists of organic Danish pastries, breads, cereals, salads, cold meats and cheeses, with a few hot cooked breakfast options available, alongside a variety of speciality teas, coffees and fruit juices.

Breakfast is available Monday-Friday 7 AM-10 AM ,and Saturday-Sunday 7 AM-11 AM.

If you do wish to stay in for lunch an dinner then there are a couple of menus in the room for external restaurants that offer free delivery to your room. This can be arranged via reception.

Everything about the Andersen Hotel feels very relaxed and chilled, from the cosy hygge atmosphere to the laid back attitude of the very friendly, very welcoming and very helpful staff.

There is no official reception area with stressed guests waiting in long queues to check in, just a duty manager sat at a desk by the front door. Everything just works and everything feels stress free. The reception area is open 24/7 and you get the impression that no request would be too much, no matter the time of day!

Fancy a speciality coffee? Head on down to the breakfast area any time and pick one up for free.

Fancy a free glass of wine? The hotel has a complimentary Wine Hour from 5-6pm every day. Again, just head down to the breakfast area and enjoy a complimentary glass!

The hotel also offers something called CONCEPT24, meaning that if you book directly with the hotel then your room is available for a full 24-hours from check-in to check-out. Otherwise check-out is at 11am.

Also, because the hotel is Green Key Certified the hotel also offers an initiative called Concept Green, meaning that guests will receive small gifts and rewards if they decline housekeeping during their stay.

The Andersen Hotel is ideally located in the heart of the historic Vesterbro district of Copenhagen, an urban hotspot and once the seedy red-light district of Copenhagen, with a notorious reputation for prostitution and drugs.

Nowadays, Vesterbro is one of the trendiest and hippest neighbourhoods to visit for anyone looking for that authentic Copenhagen feel. The area mixes urban family living with nightlife hotspots, fashion boutiques, modern coffee shops, pop-up eateries, and high-end dining options.

The Andersen Hotel is situated in a prime spot just a 5-minute walk from Copenhagen Central  Station (København H) and a short stroll from the famous Meatpacking district (Kødbyen), a revitalised creative cluster boasting a trendy dining scene, eclectic bohemian galleries and buzzing nightlife. Major city attractions such as Tivoli, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek and Rosenborg Castle are also just a short walk away.

With nightly rates starting at DKK 1650 (approx £190), the hotel might seem expensive, but then again Copenhagen is a very expensive city. If you are looking for a stylish boutique stay, close to transport links and all the major city attractions, and with a modern and relaxed feel, then look no further than the Andersen Hotel.
